BACCUP Mobile Crisis Unit
The Bullhead City Police Department operates an embedded mobile crisis unit known as BACCUP – Bullhead Area Community Crisis Unification Program.
Purpose
BACCUP provides immediate support for community members experiencing a mental health crisis. The program connects individuals to behavioral health services and resources, helping them find stability without entering the criminal justice system.
How It Works
- When first responders encounter someone in acute crisis, a BACCUP team member can be dispatched to the scene.
- Once the scene is safe, the team takes the lead in addressing the individual’s behavioral health needs.
- This allows police officers and emergency personnel to return quickly to other public safety duties.
Benefits to the Community
- Offers compassionate, professional crisis intervention.
- Reduces unnecessary arrests and involvement in the justice system.
- Provides direct connections to mental health resources and long-term support.
- Relieves pressure on law enforcement and emergency services.
Why It Matters
In the past, officers often had limited options when responding to a mental health crisis, sometimes resulting in arrests to ensure the individual’s safety. With BACCUP, individuals now receive focused care, more time, and direct connections to services that address their needs.
