Text-to-911

The City of Bullhead City has integrated text messaging into its 911 system to help those who cannot safely make a phone call.

When to Use Text-to-911

Calling 911 is still the fastest and most effective way to reach emergency services. However, text-to-911 is a helpful option for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired, as well as in situations where speaking could put you in danger

How to Text 911

  1. Open a new text message.
  2. In the “To” field, enter: 911
  3. In your message, include: type of emergency & exact location
  4. Press Send
  5. Stay with your phone. Be ready to respond to questions and follow dispatcher instructions.

Important Guidelines

  • Use plain English. Avoid abbreviations, emojis, photos, or videos.
  • Do not send group texts - text 911 only.
  • Text-to-911 does not work if your phone is roaming. A text or data plan is required.
  • Never text 911 while driving.

9-1-1 Education for Kids

Teaching children how and when to call 9-1-1 can save lives. Our emergency dispatchers visit schools and community events to show kids the right way to call for help in an emergency.

During these demonstrations, children practice dialing 9-1-1 on a simulator and role-play what it’s like to talk with a dispatcher. This hands-on experience helps them feel more confident and prepared if they ever need to make the call.

Tips for Parents:

  • Teach children their full home address and practice saying it out loud.
  • Help them memorize a parent’s or trusted adult’s phone number.
  • Remind them that 9-1-1 is for emergencies only, such as when someone is hurt, in danger, or there is a fire.
  • Encourage them to stay calm, listen carefully to the dispatcher’s questions, and follow instructions.

By practicing at home and participating in 9-1-1 education, kids learn valuable safety skills that could make a difference in an emergency.
