20-Day Vehicle Impounds

If your vehicle was impounded by the Bullhead City Police Department for a 20-day impoundment:

  • Read the information provided by the officer at the time of impoundment for detailed instructions.
  • If impounded by another law enforcement agency, contact that agency directly.
  • If impounded as evidence, these procedures do not apply. Contact the Property and Evidence (928) 763-9200 for more information.

What to Know

  • In most cases, you must wait 20 days before your vehicle can be released.
  • Only the Bullhead City Police Department can authorize the release. The towing company cannot release the vehicle without police approval.
  • In some cases, you may qualify for early release, but you must still pay all fees and charges.

On or after the 20th day of impoundment, your vehicle may be eligible for release.

  1. Call the Bullhead City Police Department
    Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (excluding holidays) to make an appointment.

  1. Bring Required Documents (must be valid and current):

  • Driver’s license (or bring a fully licensed driver if yours is not valid), vehicle registration, and proof of current financial responsibility (insurance).
  1. Pay the Administrative Fee at the Police Department:

  • $150. Accepted payment: cash, personal check, money order, credit, or debit.
  1. Go to the Towing Company to pay:

  • Towing fee (flat rate)
  • $25/day storage fee
  • Additional gate fee may apply if after business hours
  • Bring proof of identity and vehicle ownership

Important: If you do not claim your vehicle within 10 days of the release date, the towing company may file for an abandoned title (A.R.S. 28-3515 & 28-4838).

Special Situations

  • Someone Else Was Driving: The vehicle owner is responsible for all fees. Recovery of costs from the driver is a civil matter between the owner and driver.

  • Title Not Yet in Your Name: You must meet all title and registration requirements before the vehicle can be released.

  • Not Guilty Verdict: The outcome of a trial does not affect the vehicle impound if the officer followed the law and procedures.

  • Who Can Claim the Vehicle: Only the owner, owner’s spouse, their agent, or lien holder. If the owner’s license is invalid, a licensed driver must be present.
